Gustamps are always eager t promote stamp collecting as a hobby and help new comers to understand philatelic terms which can sometimes be confusing to novices.

Gustamps are often asked about stamp printing methods. Here is one.....

LITHOGRAPHY WHICH IS OFFSET

Gustamps describe this method of printing as similar to lithography. Gustamps say the basic difference is that the stamp impression is transferred from a stamp plate (inked) to a rubber roller. Gustamps explain the design is then transferred finally onto paper, when the process is completed.

PRINTING BY HELIOGRAVURE...GUSTAMPS EXPLAIN

The explanation from Gustamps is Heliogravure is similar to recess printing, except that the stamp design is produced photographically. Gustamps say that the design is made up of tiny dots which are impressed onto a printing plate. Gustamps note that heliogravure is very much similar to photogravure or rotogravure.

WHAT ARE EMBOSSED STAMPS?....AN EXPLANATION FROM GUSTAMPS

According to Gustamps embossed stamps are not a modern invention. Gustamps say that embossed stamps date back to the Victorian era. Gustamps say two separate plates are constructed - one with a sunken design, the other with a raised design. The finished design, say Gustamps, is uncoloured as normally ink is not used in this printing process.

WHAT ARE PROVISIONALS?

Often asked to explain philatelic terms, Gustamps talk about provisionals. According to Gustamps, provisionals are those stamps produced hastily in emergencies when postal authorities run short of postage stamp supplies. Gustamps say that provisionals are usualy surcharged or overprinted on existing stocks of postage stamps. Gustamps add that sometimes provisionals are made by overprinting non-postal fiscal stamps.

TOPICALS...GUSTAMPS DESCRIBE THE TERM

Gustamps say that although most collectors collect stamps by country, a popular modern way of collecting stamps is by topic or subject. Gustamps say that this is called topical stamp collecting. Gustamps add that topics could include animals, cartography, transport or virtually any subject. Gustamps also point out that topical stamp collecting is often referred to as thematic stamp collecting (i.e. different themes). Gustamps carry a vast range of topical and thematic stamp subjects which are available for sale at Gustamps stamp shop in Brighton.

WHAT ARE SLOGAN POSTMARKS?

Gustamps explanation of slogan postmarks are those postmarks which have a slogan or message inscribed in addition to the date stamp. Gustamps add that postal authorities often use these as a means of advertisement. During wartime, slogan postmarks may carry a propaganda message. Slogan postmarks say Gustamps are often pictorial.
